Li, Mingji. 2009. A Comparative Study on Refusal Speech Acts in Korean and Chinese students who study in university. Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language, 34, 313~345. Refusal speech acts are most likely to incur the “face threatening problem” in conversation. In order to keep a good relationship with Koreans, it is imperative to have some basic knowledge on the Korean’s preferred way to refuse properly. Previous studies on refusal speech acts have been primarily focused on the application of the speech strategies. However, there are almost no studies on what kind of specific expressions are using in the conversation. The present study performed a comparative analysis on the discourse variables of refusal speech acts expressions, in particular, their exact forms and the semantic meanings in Korean and Chinese language. The results showed that in Korean language, refusals are usually made indirectly and the speculation, reasoning is employed in the expressions; on the contrary, in Chinese, refusals are usually made directly and explanation, lack of ability is mainly employed in the expressions. Moreover, in Korean language, the expressions of speculation, reasoning and explanation are mainly used, while in Chinese, the expressions of explanation, lack of ability and intention are commonly used. Collectively, employing these results to Korean language teaching might be useful in speech acts teaching. (Seoul National University)
