Higher education is experiencing rapid and continuous change. Much of the current debate concerning good teaching in higher education is moving from teacher-centered conceptions to student -centered conceptions. In the light of these changes in the higher education, it is timely to consider how the conceptions of good teaching are perceived by students. The purpose of this study is to explore college students’ perceptions of good teaching in higher education. Students’ sense of good teaching is defined by their classroom experiences. 38 reflective essays about good teaching practice written by students were analyzed qualitatively. The four most important conceptions of good teaching from the student perspective are, satisfying students intellectually and emotionally, stimulating students to grow up and mature, having good communication and engagement with students, and being student-centered. The main characteristics of student-centered teaching are using various instructional methods, having enthusiasm for the subject matter, giving an example related to real life, and providing meaningful assignments involving the course. Frequently mentioned characteristics of good teaching includes good communication with students and student-centered teaching. Students’ perceptions of good teaching are in line with theories of good teaching, the constructivist view. These four aspects of good teaching are areas that professors might focus on as priorities in the design of their course. Thus, the findings will show current thinking about conceptions of good teaching in higher education and promote changes in instructional environment
