This paper explored the implications which the sexual selection theory in modern evolutionary biology may have in gender studies in social sciences by examining first the contributions made by Darwinian feminists in correcting male biases in Darwinian sexual selection theory and then the criticisms made by feminists on these evolutionary studies. Darwinian female evolutionists successfully challenged the sexstereotypes portrayed in human evolution models and primate behavior studies. Their efforts transformed females from a passive sexual resource for men to exploit to active agents and creators of human culture. However, works of these Darwinian feminists have been received by feminist scholars with ambiguity. Darwinian feminists have been criticized by the very fact that they are Darwinists whose research is guided by Darwinian sexual selection theory. Although Darwinian sexual selection theory is not free from its history of male biases, the modern sexual selection theory is an incredibly powerful theory which enables researchers to organize the observed sex differences systematically and to predict behavioral differences between the two sexes given a specific contextual information. If feminists wish to overcome the dilemmas in which they find themselves in their often problematic criticisms of evolutionary biological studies and to achieve a more complete understanding of the origin of sex differences, it would be a loss for feminism to keep rejecting an evolutionary framework.
