This paper explores the regional conflicts in the disused coal mining areas in Gangwon Province by analyzing the logics and contradictions that lead to the regional conflicts. In order to do it, this paper captures the characteristics and contradictions of the coal mining areas in Gangwon Province, where had played as a single-functional space, in terms of the political economy of space. This paper shows that the coal mining areas have been transformed a living space into a dead space because of curtailing coal products, and then it had posed severe problems for the survival of people in the regions, and they, in turn, have resulted in the violent struggles of winning the right to live. However, the advent of contradictions over these regional problems is not a inevitably cause of the regional conflicts. That is, even though the conflict front is emerged, it does not bring about a immediate conflict. The sequences of contradictions and the action strategies of agents have an influence on whether the conflict occur or not. Within this context, this paper firstly explains how the conflict fronts without conflict and with conflict have been formed by the contradictions and action strategies in the disused coal mining areas, particularly in relation to restructuring the coal mining and constructing the casino. Secondly, this paper dynamically analyzes how these conflicts have been adjusted and re-adjusted in regional political arena, and then examines that they have changed the structures of the regional problems. Finally, this paper discusses the directions of social change in the disused coal mining areas by diagnosing the unsolved problems which have been derived from the regional conflicts and its adjustments.
