Sijos(or three-stanza Korean poems) of Kim Sang-og should be examined not in relation to traditional sijos but in relation to the realities of those days. That is because his sijos take on modernity and, above all, the writer wants his literary nature to be identified. In this respect, his sijos need to be interpreted through imagination. When his works are examined from the perspective of imagination, his theme consistently found from his early-day works to recent ones is consciousness about the origin. In his first collection of sijos, his consciousness about the origin appears in his interest in hometown, mother, and remains of the Korean race and this evolves into interest in 'earth,' one of the origin-oriented images. In his sijos, earth, as an original material, gradually becomes crystallized and purified and appears as an image of a mineral matter (physical imagination). Furthermore, ‘ceramics’, which symbolize perfection of earth, take on the same meaning as 'gold' pursued in alchemy and become the alchemist imagination aiming at accomplishing a perfect being. The physical imagination and alchemist imagination in his sijos are to overcome a sense of alienation facing a fragmented being suffering from want in civilized modern society and at the same time they aim to achieve artistic completion as ontological redemption of human beings.
