There are 30 agricultural wholesale markets in Korea by late 2003. Of these 23 marketshave been operating stably for over 3 years. The study evaluates the relative efficiency of operation ofthese 23 wholesale markets by using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model. Analysis of DEA/CRmodel shows that only 8 out of the 23 wholesale markets have efficiency score of 1 or 100%. The remain-ing 15 markets are thus inefficient. The average efficiency score for all the 23 wholesale markets is 0.8429and the average inefficiency rate is 15.71%. The average efficiency score of 0.9469 for the central whole-wholesale markets. Thus clearly local wholesale markets have been operating relatively more ineffi-ciently than central wholesale markets. The analysis further shows that there is a ned of an input reduc-tion rate of 22.35% for facility area, 20.2% for distributors and 14.85% for number of employes for theentire agricultural wholesale market to be efficient. The average of rate technical efficiency is 0.8429 andthe average rate of pure technical efficiency is 0.9023 as per the results of the CCR and BCC models forDEA. 8 wholesale markets are observed to be efficient in terms of scale efficiency. 8 markets aredecreasing returns to scale (DRS). It is observed that for many wholesale markets management withregard to reduction of inputs is more desirable than expanding scale with a view to achieving higher lev-els of efficiency.
