This paper explores how participants negotiate and manage floors in Korean and English interactive written discourse known as Internet Relay Chat (IRC). This paper first discusses some major features of computer-mediated communication (CMC) and electronic discourse. This paper then introduces the concept of floor, and investigates the five major floor management types with reference to the cooperative principle and the politeness principles: collaborative floor, parallel floor, noncollaborative floor, inviting floor, and excluding floor. This study notes that Edelsky's floor model provides a useful framework for analyzing floor as a global construct in CMC.
