V. S. Naipaul describes his journey and stay in England wishing to witness the living empire and let materialize his childhood “imperial” fantasy about the metropolis. Once there, however, he is disappointed to find that the England of his fantasy no longer exists due to the decline of the Empire and the inroads of modernity. The valetudinarian landlord of the manor is suffering from acedia, and his estate is decaying. For all this, the narrator attempts to interpret the “decay” as “flux” and find grandeur in the ailing landlord, who is in many respects equated with the Empire. He has been acutely aware of the former colony of Trinidad and England as two separate worlds, and in the same way, keenly conscious of the great disparity of the man and the writer in himself. He tries to bridge the two worlds combining the man and the writer. He has always been conscious of his limitation as a Third-world writer-to-be, with no sophisticated tradition to rely upon. For him, writing becomes the prop in the face of decay and mortality, and a tactic for overcoming his limitation. A modernist quality gains momentum as the story proceeds because he becomes more self-reflexive as a writer and more aware of the role or vocation of the artist. He comes to realize that his own lived experience in his homeland is necessary to be a full-fledged writer. At the same time, however, he has to acknowledge that the world of Trinidad is still in “darkness.” In the end he reaches a reconciliation or a synthesis of these two separate worlds through the act of writing, but it still rests as a precarious equilibrium. Swerving from imperial themes, he maintains an apolitical stance and becomes more interested with universal and less local themes like mutability, romance and fantasy.
