The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of long-term endurance exercises, swimming and marathon on HRV. Resting heart rate, VO2max, and HRV monitoring were undertaken in male elite swimmers(G1), marathoners(G2), and sedentary(CG) age 22.4±3.0 years. HRV was assessed by time and frequency domain measures. One-way ANOVA was used to compare group differences of HRV variables, differences of heart rate rest(HRrest) and VO2max between the groups, and Schffe was used for post hoc analysis. To analyze correlation among HRrest, VO2max and HRV variables, pearson's correlation were used. Significant differences of HRV between athletes and sedentary were found except by RMSSD variable using time frequency domain analysis method. Significant correlation between HRrest and RR-interval in G1(r=.-899, p<.05) was found. These results indicated that swimming and marathon exercises could provide positive effects on HRV. It is possible therefore that swimming and marathon may be used as a therapy for improving automatic activity in order to prevent health risks. However, the findings suggest that special caution should be taken when highly young athletes' HRV is measured and analyzed.
