The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes of the trunk muscle strength after specialized Swiss balls exercise programs. It was the aim of this study to support for the chronic low back patients rehabilitation. The myoelectric activity of eight trunk muscles was quantified before and after 12 weeks Swiss balls exercise. Participants performed Swiss balls exercise such as supine chest press, bridging, pelvic rotation, prone leg raise alternate, lateral leg raise, biceps curl and overhead triceps extension, ball push to wall. A repeated measures paired t-test was used to determine the influence of specialized Swiss balls exercise. There was statistically significant (p<.05) difference in muscle activity between specialized Swiss balls exercise compared with before and after. However, there was large degree of variability across subjects suggesting that some individuals respond differently to surface stability. These findings suggest that the incorporation of swiss balls instead of an exercise bench into upper body strength training regimes may not be justified based only on the belief that an increase spinal stabilizing musculature activity is inherent. Biomechanically justified ground based exercises have been researched and should form the basis for spinal stability training as preventative and therapeutic exercise training regimes. General abdominal and low back muscle strength was increased after specialized Swiss balls exercise. The present study indicated that Swiss ball exercise is the effective means for trunk strengthening. Thus, that exercise can have positive effects on chronic low back patients in them of corrective and preventive self management exercise program.
