In addition to listening, reading, and writing skills, spoken language is one of several key elements of communication in language. The aim of spoken language is to deliver messages efficiently and effectively, however speaking activities are rarely emphasized in the language classroom. While systematic pedagogical methods for grammar are relatively organized at beginning levels, they have not been well-organized in advanced level language curricula. In particular, speaking activities and speaking performance evaluations for higher level learners have not been carried out properly thus far. In this study, we have developed a speaking program based upon debate activity and have accumulated an inventory of evaluations of advanced level learners. The study shows that implementation of developed speaking activities leads to significantly more frequent use of functional expressions in debate. The study concludes that evaluation methods for speaking skills of advanced level learners can be designed with reliability and validity. (Yonsei University)
