In this work, formation behavior of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) films on different aluminum alloys and dielectric breakdown in air of the films were studied. The AAO films on pure Al and five different alloys of AA1050, AA2024, AA5052, AA6061 and AA7075 were prepared under constant current density of 40 mA·cm<SUP>-2</SUP> at 15±0.5 °C in 6 wt.% oxalic acid solution. The film formation behavior of pure Al and different alloys was investigated by comparing responses of anodizing voltage and electrolyte temperature with time, film growth rate, observation of surface appearance, top-view and cross-sectional SEM observation.
