3차원 망상형 고분자 구조를 가진 고흡수성 폴리머(Super Absorbent Polymer, SAP)는 빠른 속도로 물을 흡수하는 능력과 물을 함유하는 보습 특성이 우수하며, 자체 중량의 수백 배에 달하는 수분을 흡수할 수 있는 고분자 재료로 인식되고 있다. 아이스팩 냉매, 기저귀 등에 사용되는 SAP은 미세플라스틱의 한 종류로서 매립 시 자연분해가 어렵고 소각 과정에서 유해가스를 배출할 우려가 있다. 이에 따라 천연자원 기반의 친환경 대체제 개발의 필요성이 강조되고 있다.
