The purpose of this study is to investigate the overall life of people with developmental disabilities through work and leisure. We conducted interviews for workers with developmental disabilities and then used survey data as a second analysis to confirm the results of interviews of how their sociability and independence vary depending on school types, how such characteristics affect employability (or willingness to work), leisure experiences, and finally, degree of life satisfaction. Our findings indicated that sociability and independence differed depending on the type of school where people with developmental disabilities graduated from, and graduates of special classes in general schools showed the highest sociality and independence. In addition, it was confirmed that work and leisure experiences differ based on varied sociability tendencies and independence depends on the school type, which can predict the life satisfaction of people with developmental disabilities. On the other hand, the difference in the relationship and importance between work and leisure depends on individual values, suggesting that people with developmental disabilities are not only influenced by developmental disabilities or the severity of the disability. Therefore, researchers defined ‘transparent boxes’ as a concept that alienates people with developmental disabilities from social participation or self-reliance, and suggested the importance of breaking these transparent boxes. They are namely limited experiences, guardians" perceptions, and social perspectives. This study attempted to clarify that the lives of people with developmental disabilities are not much different from those with non-disabled and physical disabilities and to provide a foundation for understanding their lives.
