Intestinal disease is a global health problem affecting millions of people. To investigate therapeutic compounds and unveil the mechanisms of the diseases, numerous in vitro intestine models have been developed as alternatives to animal surrogates. Intestinal organoids have shown that they can emulate major human physiology, but it is difficult to control their growth and maturation. On the other hand, microphysiological systems (MPSs) have been enabled to recapitulate intestinal tissues in vitro and its ecosystem with commensal microbiomes, their geometrical complexity is limited to 2D or 2.5D architectures.
