Objective The current article aims to review emerging issues on autonomous technology and human-machine interface (HMI) and identify important design requirements for autonomous vehicle interface. Background: Mixed automation driving environment is near at hand in which a set of vehicles at varying level of automation (LOA), people, road infrastructure, and communication systems will seamlessly interact via HMI. Autonomous technology may invite unprecedented threats to safety, reliability, and driving performance. Simultaneously, new opportunities will arise to enable rich, intercultural experiences. Therefore, HMI design should carefully examine plausible use cases and navigate design space while gauging the limits and risks of automation. Method: The first section reviewed emerging issues and relevant literature on user modeling, vehicle systems design, and operation. The second section reviewed the trend of passenger-vehicle interaction and identified four areas of design needs. Results: The article identified a list of Human Factors and Ergonomics (HF/E) topics regarding HMI systems design and suggested display screen, information visualization, typography, and inclusive design, as important areas of interface design. Application: The results of the trend and topical analysis could help increase awareness of HF/E in future HMI design.
