This classroom action research examined multilevel students with a focus on student-centered teaching practices. The students were ESL immigrants from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds. Data were collected from classroom observations with a focus on one period of the ESL class and personal communications with two classroom teachers. In this ESL class, I implemented several teaching practices to overcome difficulties resulting from multilevel arrangements, which hinder student-centered teaching. Students spoke in some instances but remained silent in others. Focusing on one low-level student, sociocultural and individual factors related to his speaking practices were explored. This classroom-based research highlights the need for investigation that further systematically integrates teaching issues and research agendas.
