This study is to examine the degree of binding to convey each meaning of the phrasal verbs and prepositional verbs phonetically according to the position of the particle and preposition. Based on phrasal verbs and prepositional verbs observed in vowel duration, intensity, and pause interval, this study aims to characterize how these acoustic cues interact with one another in American and Korean speakers. The results of the analysis indicate that the American speakers have a larger pause when the verbs and adverbs of the phrasal verbs are not adjacent. When a verb comes in front of a preposition, the pause period is shorter than that of a noun. On the other hand, there was no difference between types of Korean speakers in the pause interval. Given the vowel duration and intensity between nouns and adverbs, the latter of the two has a greater value. The Korean speaker did not find the difference between the phrasal verbs and the prepositional verb through the parameter values. This suggests that the Korean speakers lack awareness of the phrasal verbs and are difficult to use in English speech.
