Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate whether new sports which are considered for the young generation introduced to the Olympic Games have changed the perception of the Olympics among millennials.
Method: To achieve the research objective, the impacts of the newly introduced sports on Olympic image, Olympic attitudes, and Olympic spectatorship were tested with 200 participants. To conduct the hypotheses proposed, a total of 186 participants were recruited via an online survey targeting the millennial generation. By using SPSS and AMOS, the data were analyzed.
Results: The results of structural equation modeling indicated that the introduction of the new sports, measured by topicality, interest, and creativity of the Olympics, had positive effects on image and attitude, while the image and attitude failed to improve media consumption intention. This can be understood that the new sports can improve the image of the Olympics and attitude toward the Olympics among the younger generation, but do not affect the media consumption intention due to the lack of promotion and broadcasting plan of new Olympic sports.
Conclusion: In summary, introduction of new sports applied to a millennial preference for Olympic may help to improve the image and attitude of Olympic games in the future. Also, there should be more effort to encourage viewership by promoting new sports thoroughly. The findings of the present study are expected to contribute to stakeholders in establishing an Olympic strategy for the younger generation.
