J. M. Coetzee, as a novelist could attempt to pictorialize his ideal state of the world where all the beings are potentially to achieve transcendence which is not a purely observed given but a potentiality in Waiting for the Barbarians. Coetzee, in this novel, explores the notions of Simone de Beauvoir’s situated ethics which functions as a standard to tell law and justice from tyranny and barbarity in human relations. To be on a way of Beauvoirean ethical philosophy, man needs to recognize the entangled bond of himself with others and admit that only through the interference and negotiations with other men situated in the common contexts, his world and project can be pushed forward into transcendence. Consequently, the magistrate’s own recognition of himself as one just man denounces Sartrean concept that all the beings are subjected to equivalent potentialities and are entitled to actualize each transcendence, which closes off a way of ethical philosophy in this novel. Whether Coetzee’s novel handles real historical forces and circumstances or, on the other, revolves around the literary indeterminacy, it suggests readings that may naturally emboss his authorial refusal to perform a way of ethical philosophy in Waiting for the Barbarians.
