This paper is a case study of picture-word cards of Japanese Hiragana and Katakana based on theories related to memory. We use word cards to remember letters and spellings of words. Words are composed of letters, which complement each other's information while presented with a picture reproducing the object. Generally, letters and pictures play a different role in visual communication. Japanese letter Kana is also one of the languages with the largest number of letters in the world. Moreover, there are many similar shapes, causing confusion for those who first encounter Kana. However, effectively designed picture-word cards activates the time of short term memory and can help users to clearly understand and remember information. Based on this background, this study investigated the expression of Japanese letter word cards which can improve memory by using two visual languages called letters and illustrations. First, I examined the information processing process and the structure of memory, which are the theoretical basis, and introduced a methodology that is effective in enhancing memory. The emphasis is on imagery information processing theory, which is related to information processing through images as much as research on the expression of word cards with illustrations. In particular, I focused on Paivio's dual coding theory and Paired associate learning paradigm. Based on these theoretical considerations, the word card expressions through the combination of Hiragana and Katakana and the illustrations of each word were designed and results were produced. Among the common tendencies to deal only with Hiragana in word cards, I tried to make a distinction in terms of including both Hiragana and Katakana and exploring expression based on the theories about memory and to present the possibility of a new expression through this study.
