This essay takes as its starting point the proverb of Solomon from Ecclesiastes 9:4: “…for a living dog is better than a dead lion.” It looks at this proverb in its context and then applies it to the lives of missionaries who ministered among aborigines from two different eras and two different parts of the world: John Paton (19th century) in New Hebrides and five missionaries to Ecuador (20th century). The five missionaries were killed very early in their attempt to reach out with the Gospel, while John Paton lived a long life of eighty-two years working and achieving much success. The writer agrees with Solomon that someone who is alive will achieve more for the Lord than someone who is dead (as the life of John Paton proves), but also recognizes the inspiration and impact that the blood of martyrs can have for the spreading of the Gospel.
