The decline of neoliberalism, the rise of protectionism and industrial policy, and the COVID-19 crisis drove a re-evaluation of the role of the state. Against this background, this article reviews recent literature on East Asian developmental states. Through case analysis of Korean economic ministries, Changes by Competition: Evolution of the Korean Development State reinterpreted development as an evolutionary process that means constant adaptation to new environmental changes and proved that the role of developing countries has been adjusted, not reduced. Comparing the cases of Korea, China, Japan, and Taiwan, Global Asia: Capitalist Development and the Future of Post-Development Countries showed that, unlike Anglo-American countries where markets (companies) introduced neoliberalism, East Asian countries (government) led neoliberalism. A Region of Regimes: Prosperity and Plunder in the Asia-Pacific presented the criteria necessary to evaluate the similarities and differences of the East Asian model by categorizing 10 East Asian countries. These three books share the assessment that developing countries have evolved in their way, at least in East Asia, contrary to the expectation of neoliberalism that developing countries will decline and transition to regulated countries after the East Asian financial crisis. In the concept of a neoliberal developmental state or reconstructed developing regime, the centrality of the state remains the same as the original concept of a developmental state.
