Due to the influence of COVID-19, many college students were unable to go to school and have been taking classes non-face-to-face for more than two years. The common spaces on campus have been neglected or closed, failing to fulfill its function as a space for students. The purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics of students’ behaviors in common spaces under the current COVID-19 situation and to propose managerial and design suggestions for those spaces to make them prepared for students’ uses for future pandemics. Behavioral mapping method was employed to analyze usage behavior in three students’ common spaces on a university campus. The analysis showed that there were not many space users due to the influence of COVID-19, online classes, and building access control, and the behavior of users was limited while using the spaces. The observation results showed, rather than interacting with each other or taking a break, most students were engaged in personal activities such as participating in non-face-to-face classes or doing assignments in a quiet atmosphere. Some space users moved to other spaces in search of functions necessary for non-face-to-face activities, such as tables or outlets. Based on this analysis, this study proposed that independent personal spaces and functions to support non-face-to-face activities are more needed in students’ common spaces than gathering spaces under the pandemic.
