This study aimed to explore the reliability, effectiveness, and utility of self-assessment in online L2 classes. A total of 167 university students completed a self-assessment five times using rubric checklists in online L2 presentation classes and participated in a survey. To ensure the validity of the survey data, 16 among them participated in in-depth interviews. As a result, 64.1% of students expressed doubts or concern that self-assessment could not be very accurate and objective in lower-level classes, but most students found it beneficial for improving motivation and L2 learning. Also, 88% of students agreed that self-assessment was effective in that it encouraged them to discern their strengths and weaknesses and engage in the learning process. Furthermore, self-assessment was recognized as a crucial learning tool in online L2 classes, which provided more opportunities to develop self-regulated learning habits, positive attitudes, and self-confidence for future learning.
