Like Chaucer, Ovid revitalized old stories familiar to his contemporaneous audience by approaching them from a new perspective. Or, by employing his peculiar narrative techniques to the old story, Ovid tried to create something original from his literary predecessor, Virgil. Ovid’s Dido in the Heroides shows the affinity of the Ovidian narrative skills with the Chaucerian ones in the Legend of Good Women. As Chaucer avoids characterizing Dido with his own words and imposing moral judgment on her, Ovid diminishes the epic Dido in the Virgilian version, and makes her more human. Ovid like Chaucer eschews the role of authoritative and omniscient storyteller and calls into question what he is narrating. As in Chaucer’s tales, the Ovidian’s techniques let the reader be a critical observer rather than let him be naively drawn into a fictitious story. Chaucer appropriated the Ovidian narrative strategies and the poet’s stance as a storyteller in The Canterbury Tales.
