The purpose of this paper is to clarify the grammaticalization of the negative adverbs kyelko in Korean and kessite in Japanese from a synchronic and diachronic point of view. Traditionally, both have been classified in various ways by previous research, such as statement adverbs, degree adverbs, etc. However, it is consistent that both have a grammatical feature that they must appear only in negative sentences in modern language. Therefore, both have been commonly called negative adverbs. In fact, both have been grammaticalized as negative adverbs since modern times. Korean has been grammaticalized since the late 19th century, and Japanese has been since the late 18th century. In other words, both appeared in the affirmative sentence before this time. As far as I can tell, there is no previous study that deals with the grammaticalization of both. The arguments of this paper is that (i) the both process of grammaticalization to negative adverbs is almost the same, (ii) the categorical transition of both is consistent with the grammaticalization cline, (iii) these grammaticalization phenomena can be explained by principles and mechanisms such as unidirectionality, decategorization, analogy/metaphor, etc. (iv) the main difference between the two is that kyelko at Stage 2 unlike kessite may have been almost skipped.
