Formation comprises a distinctive set of sedimentary layers, which can be traceable laterally and mapped as a unit. It is a fundamental unit for stratigraphic position in a regional scale and provides an important basis for the interpretation of depositional processes and environments. This paper reviews the occurrence of the Jangsan Formation at the base of the Taebaek Group (Cambrian–Ordovician) in the Taebaeksan Basin and refines the geologic map unit for sedimentary characteristics and stratigraphic position. The refined Jangsan Formation comprises a set of distinctive sandstone (quartzite) with a number of sedimentary facies, including conglomerate, conglomeratic sandstone, and mudstone. The “Myeonsan Formation” is limited to a localized set, and leads it fallen into disuse. The refined Jangsan Formation can be reliably correlated with the equivalent early Cambrian sandstone unit (Liguan Formation) in Shandong Province, China about a thousand kilometers apart and elsewhere in the northeast Asian continent.
