Japan has provided a transition period of two years from 2019 for the full implementation of middle school English education in accordance with the New Course of Study in 2021. This study observed the appearance of middle school English education to be implemented during the transition period based on various data including transitional measures. As a result, it was confirmed that the direction the new study guideline for the reform of English education in Japan is aimed at is practical English. In particular, it is noteworthy that English classes are based on Teaching English in English (TEE), and that in-depth language activities are emphasized in the learning content. It is also noteworthy that the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology significantly increased the vocabulary for practical communication among middle school students. On the other hand, although TEE was once introduced in secondary English education in Korea, it is currently not emphasized much. On the other hand, in Japan, TEE was specified in the New Course of Study guidelines. It is noteworthy how Japan will achieve TEE and the cultivation of thinking, judgments, and expressions in a balanced way. Observing the trend of Japanese education reforms in the future will have many implications for the secondary foreign language education in Korea.
