Human death is an eternal topic in scholarly inquiry as well as everyday life. It is especially critical for hospice palliative care music therapists, who see off end-of-life patients with music, to contemplate and understand human death. This qualitative phenomenological study describes hospice music therapists and explores its meaning and essence. Using critical sampling, six therapists who currently work in various hospice settings were recruited. We conducted interviews with each participant either online or in-person, and we collected the music files and song lyrics that were used in their therapy session. Using various triangulation tactics, we analyzed the collected data and developed textural and structural descriptions of the phenomena. The participants’ experiences and perceptions regarding human death were categorized into four central themes: 1) fear, 2) life process, 3) preparation, and 4) companionship. Through posing a key existential question and shedding light on music therapists’ related experiences, this inquiry confers practical understanding of hospice music therapy and may generate further clinical and scholarly discussions.
