Effects of Dementia Prevention Gatekeeper Education Program on Knowledge, Attitudes, and Empathy Toward Peoplewith Dementia Among Nursing StudentsMyunghee Park & Eunju Bong Abstract: This study is quasi-experimental research using the Nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design that examine the effects of the dementia prevention gatekeeper education program on the knowledge, attitude and empathy of nursing students. The participants were nursing students in the first and second grades of two similar colleges in G city. The participants were 34 students from A university, and the control group, 36 students from B university, did not. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS 20.0, descriptive statistics, t-test, and ANCOVA. The dementia prevention gatekeeper education program verified the effectiveness of nursing college students who participated in the experimental group after conducting a total of 16 hours of theoretical education, four visits to prevent dementia for the elderly with mild cognitive impairment, and one dementia prevention activity. The results of this study showed that the experimental group participating in the dementia prevention gatekeeper education program ignificantly improved their knowledge, attitude and empathy for dementia compared to the control group. The dementia prevention education program is expected to be presented as an effective program to improve empathy as well as knowledge and attitudes of nursing students about dementia.
