The modernization that Romania underwent in the first half of the 20th century involved a series of efforts to leave behind traditional cultural frameworks, dominated either by models from the West (France and Germany) or by the cultural heritage bequeathed by the old relations with the Ottoman Empire. One path of modernization identified by some intellectual circles was the diversification of intellectual interests and the new opening of areas of study that had been absent until that time in Romanian culture and institutions. The establishment of a school of Oriental studies, the formulation of general theories of culture, and the interest in universal history were some of the projects developed by intellectuals with diverse outlooks and orientations, such as the historian Nicolae Iorga, the philosophers Lucian Blaga and Anton Dumitriu, the writer and historian of religions Mircea Eliade. In this context, there arose a strong interest in Chinese history and culture, either as part of a broader reflection on universal civilization or as a field of study in its own right. This article explores these first attempts to understand the characteristics of Chinese culture and civilization by Romanian thinkers, starting with Nicolae Milescu’s intellectual odyssey, and continuing with the account of Chinese thought in Lucian Blaga’s concept of cultural philosophy.
