The paper explores the semantic meaning of bare nouns in donkey sentence. Korean is known as an articleless language, and the ambiguous meaning of covarying interpretation between universal and existential reading in donkey sentences can be achieved by means of bare nouns. The following questions need to be addressed: First, what are the characteristics of Korean bare nouns in donkey sentences? Second, how can we capture the unifying formal analysis between universal and existential readings? For these questions, this study proposes the following answers. First, the bare nouns in Korean can be treated as an e-type “numberless” definite description. Following Schwaz (2009), it is further shown that two Korean bare nouns in donkey sentences (i.e. proceeding NP vs. following NP) have a part-whole relationship in the bridging context. In this case, the following bare noun plays a role as a weak definite of type〈e〉. Based on the plural semantics of complete semilattice structure, the study provides a formal representation of disambiguation between existential and universal reading in donkey sentences with a quantification over situations.
