D. H. Lawrence’s ‘The Fox’ endured a complicated revisional process, which started in 1918 and completed in 1923. As the result, there are many variants such as a manuscript in the author’s autograph (MS), a carbon copy proof (TCC), two published versions in journals (Per 1 & Per 2), a carbon copy proof with the author’s corrections (TCCR), and many different versions in book form (E 1 & A 1 etc.). These variants are registered with many changes made at each stage. A comparison of the various versions allows us to trace the trajectory of the author’s shifting focus. Distinctively the newly added ‘long tail’ in the final version incited the criticism of Lawrence’s male chauvinism with the brutal ending. Clearly the main theme of the story revolves around the key ideas of ‘man-woman relationship’ and ‘submission to life force’ Yet to substantiate such criticism is not without some difficulties. While the quest for ‘man-woman relationship’ and ‘submission to life force’ continued, a comparative approach to the variant texts reveals the author’s shifting focus from the submission to the battle of wills.
