At a time when non-face-to-face worship is getting common with the outbreak of COVID-19, this study aims to determine how the listeners feel the difference between online and offline preaching by using quantitative and qualitative study methods. This survey of 183 participants collected from two local churches located in the Seoul metropolitan region shows that online preaching scored lower than offline preaching in all categories, including ‘Understanding of the content’(M=3.67; M=4.13), ‘Preacher’s enthusiasm’(M=4.14; M=4.53), ‘Delivery’(M=4.02; M=4.44), ‘Vividness’(M=3.22; M=4.04), ‘Spiritual influence’(M=3.71; M=4.39), and ‘Worship environment’(M=2.82; M=4.41). Analyzing answers to open-ended questions on the survey also corroborates that the listeners are not satisfied with online preaching. They cited difficulty of concentration(n=24), lack of relationship(n=15), lack of sense of reality or vividness(n=12), and laziness(n=12) as the disadvantages of on-line preaching. Based on the findings of this study, we proposed strengthening the ability of preachers to preach online, cutting off the distractions, raising the participation of listeners and relationships, and education for listeners to improve online preaching.
