Memorial stones provide primary historical records and are studied in large amounts of research across many different academic fields, including epigraphy, historical studies, and folklore. The forms and making methods of memorial stones offer an abundance of materials for archeology and art history. Taking huge interest in epigraphs, the researcher came across an interesting memorial stone at Seokdang Museum of Dong-A University that had not been reported yet in academic circles, which led to this study. The present study offers an analysis of a memorial stone of “Jeong Baek-bung” housed at Seokdang Museum of Dong-A University. It is a Cheolhwabaekja(鐵畵白磁) memorial stone comprised of eight pyeons. Created in the 16th century when the forms of memorial stones became increasingly smaller and longer in content, it is a good example of a typical memorial stone for nobility to fully display its characteristics. Jeong Baek-bung was a literary figure of Joseon. He passed the state exam in 1504 (tenth year of King Yeonsangun's reign) and started his career as Jinsa(進士). He held many different important positions in the government until 1545, when King Myeongjong came to the throne and eventually moved up to Jeongheondaebu(正憲大夫), bringing honor to the Jeong family of Onyang. There are a few specific records about his past. During research of the present study, the researcher was able to collect more detailed materials about him, such as the fact that he held office as Hyeongjopanseo(刑曹判書), Jijungchubusa(知中樞府事) and even Jeongheondaebu(正憲大夫) in Jeong2Pum(正二品) grade in Joseon to supplement the shortage of his historical materials found in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty. These findings provide a good reason to conclude that the memorial stone of “Jeong Baek-bung” at Seokdang Museum of Dong-A University holds huge significance even if only for its value as primary historical materials.
