The study was aimed at exploring how sports coaching leaders would select athletes. To this end, in-depth interviews, literature materials, Internet materials, reports, etc. were collected from six sports coaching leaders, and the results were derived through inductive category analysis. First of all, the study found that there was no clear standard for selecting players, so the method of selecting players by empirical coaching of sports coaching leaders was applied. Considering the characteristics and performance factors of each sport, the method of selecting players by empirical coaching was applied. Above all, the method of selecting players is bound to vary depending on the sports event, and they were selecting players by relying on empirical coaching from sports coaching leaders. Second, the lack of systematic data and research on player selection and the difficulty of applying standardized player selection methods presented the need for a database that presents clear and acceptable standards based on sports science. In addition, it recognized that the method of selecting athletes should be changed due to changes in sports policy, a decrease in school age population, and changes in the entrance examination system, and selected players according to the changing standards of the times
