Purpose : This study aims to investigate how the mechanical properties including tone, elasticity, and stiffness for the erector spinae muscles will be changed in the aged people compared with the young. Methods : The tone, elasticity, and stiffness of the erector spinae were measured using myometric method from 23 young (age range of 19 to 28) and 22 old (age range of 69 to 83) male adult subjects (total of 47 subjects). The measurements were performed in two different positions: prone and sitting. The tone, elasticity, and stiffness of the erector spinae muscles were statistically compared between the young and the old group using t-test. Results : The tone and the stiffness of the erector spinae muscles were greater, and the elasticity was lesser in the old subjects than in the young (p < 0.01~0.001). The results were similar in both prone and sitting positions. Conclusion : The myometrically measured physical properties of the erector spinae muscles such as tone, elasticity, and stiffness, were found to be changed with aging, in a degenerative way with increase of tone and stiffness and decrease of elasticity. In addition, the myometric method can be suggested to be useful to examine age-related changes in muscle quality if more data are accumulated and standard methods of application are established in the future.
