The importance of economic evaluation in the healthcare sector is increasing. Cost-utility analysis, a method of economic evaluation, uses the quality-adjusted lifetime as a result indicator, which is calculated by calculating the quality weights for the health states. The valuations of health states were conducted by cardinal methods such as standard gamble, time trade-off, and visual analog scale. The cardinal methods can directly calculate the quality weights, but the cognitive burden is large at the time of execution and the result may be biased due to various factors. There are ordinal methods such as ranking method and discrete choice experiment. These methods elicitate preference by ordering according to preference for health states. The ordinal methods have been used as an ancillary method in the valuation of the health states. Recently, there has been an increasing tendency to calculate the quality weights using ordinal methods. In valuation studies of health states, it is necessary to select appropriate methods among the ordinal methods as well as the cardinal methods that are widely used in consideration of the health states to be evaluated, the characteristics of the subjects, and the survey conducting environment.
