기독교통일학회는 그동안 한국 사회의 가장 중요한 문제 중 하나인 ‘통일’을 다루는 담론에 적극적으로 참여하여왔다. 비록 기독교통일학회가 공공신학을 염두에 둔 학회로서 출범한 것이 아니었지만, 학회의 활동을 분석해볼 때 공공신학 실천의 한국적 모델로 특별하게 기능해 왔다는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 본 연구는 먼저 현대사회의 특징인 세속화, 세계화, 시민, 다원주의 사회 속에서 종교 또는 기독교의 역할에 대한 논의들을 소개하면서, 비슷한 특징을 보이는 한국 사회에서도 기독교의 공적 역할이 요구됨을 증명한다. 나아가 기독교통일학회가 공론장의 역할을 해왔다는 사실을 살펴보는 것도 매우 중요하다. 공론장은 ‘개방성’, ‘의사소통 합리성’, ‘공개성’의 특징을 가지는데 기독교통일학회의 실천 또한 이런 특징들을 보여주는 활동을 강조해왔다. 공공신학은 기독교가 공론장에 참여하여 더 넓은 사회의 공공선을 위해 기여하려는 것을 추구한다. 이를 위해 기독교는 성경과 기독교 전통에 근거한 신념을 비기독교인들이 이해할 수 있는 언어로 번역하는 것을 추구하는데 이는 간학문적 연구를 불러온다. 갈 길을 잃은 사회를 향해 방향성을 제시하는 것, 선지자적 목소리로 그들의 불법을 일깨우는 것은 공공신학의 중요한 특징이다. 이러한 공공신학적 논의는 각 지역의 특색을 반영한다. 기독교통일학회는 ‘통일’이라는 매우 한국적인 주제를 중심으로 다룬다. 이 학회는 정치, 외교, 경제, 북한, 신학, 법률, 교육, 사회복지, 문화/예술, 역사/철학, 과학/기술, 간호/보건, 경영과 같은 다양한 분야의 전문가들로 구성되어있다. 그들은 통일에 대한 기독교적 관점을 제시하기 위해 자신의 전문적 지식을 사용한다. 따라서 기독교통일학회는 공공신학 실천의 한국적 모델로 평가될 수 있다.

The Christian Society for National Reunification(CSNR) has been actively engaging in discourses dealing with ‘reunification’, one of the most important issues in Korean society. Although the CSNR was not launched as a academic society for public theology, all its efforts confirm that it has played a particular role as a Korean model for the practice of public theology. This project describes various debates on the role of religion or Christianity in the secularized, globalized, civil, and pluralistic societies, which are important characteristics of modern society, and proves that Korean society having similar characteristics is also calling for the public role of Christianity. Furthermore, it is very significant to examine the fact that the CSNR has played a role as a ‘public sphere’. The public sphere has the factors of ‘accessibility’, ‘communicative rationality’, and ‘openness’, which are also emphasized in the practice of the CSNR. Public theology seeks to contribute to the common good of the wider society by participating in the public sphere. To this end, Christianity attempts to translate their conviction based on the Bible and Christian tradition into the language that non-Christians can understand, which needs interdisciplinary study. Providing a direction to the wider society that has lost its way and awakening their injustice with a prophetic voice are significant features of public theology. Such public theological discourses reflect the context of certain region. The CSNR focuses on ‘reunification’ that is the most Korean topic. It consists of experts in various fields such as politics, diplomacy, economics, North Korea, theology, law, education, social welfare, culture/art, history/philosophy, science/technology, nursing/health, and business administration. They use their knowledge to present a Christian perspective on reunification. Therefore, the CSNR can be evaluated as a Korean model for the practice of public theology.
