This paper aims to find out the causes and characteristics of Brexit in relation to such factors as British identity, Euroscepticism, anti-immigration sentiment, and racism. The main data were obtained by in-depth interviews with residents living in the UK. To support arguments in the research and to conduct comprehensive analyses, I combined these with statistical data and preceding research data. According to this study, one of important causes of Brexit was Britons’ racism against immigrants. It was found that its boundary has particularly been expanded to Whites from Central and Eastern Europe. In other words, they tend to be considered as both strangers with cultural heterogeneity and competitors in job-hunting or welfare benefits these days. In this view, racism in the UK is based on race, but it could be said that it is a sort of discrimination against minority ethnic groups including Whites from Central and Eastern Europe. Therefore, Brexit could be identified with a political event proclaiming the UK as a nation-state dominated by Whites from Britain around the world. Euroscepticism was another major cause of Brexit. In this context, Brexit could be interpreted as a political event showing the victory of British Euroscepticism in a ferocious battle with European identity. Finally, these findings suggest that introspection and flexible adjustment of Euroscepticism, countermeasures against generational conflicts evidently revealed in the Brexit referendum, and aggressive policies to resolve conflicts between minority ethnic groups including races should be set up as urgent projects of the UK in the post-Brexit age.
