This study classified and analyzed themes and symbols presented in the sandpictures of children who had experienced emotional abuse. The participants of the research were three girls who were referred to a family counseling center for reported domestic violence and child abuse. Individual sandplay therapy was administered once a week, for a total of 12 sessions. Given that the participants were both minors and victims, for research ethics, the victimized children and their non-perpetrating guardians, as well as the center manager, were informed of the research objectives, background, procedures and methodologies in advance. Measures were also taken to ensure that the children took part in the research of their own volition. As for the collected data, the qualitative approach to case studies conceptualized by Stake (1995), which can disclose the characteristics of study participants’ subjective experiences, was used to identify themes and expressions shown in sandplay cases, categorize them according to their characteristics, and derive common themes and symbols. The research found five common themes in the sandpictures of children who experienced emotional abuse: evil witch/queen, grand dinner, bountiful tree, safe shelter, and special jewels. Participants could safely express the psychological pain associated with their trauma experience through sandplay therapy. In addition, they showed frequent nonverbal gestures when expressing their emotions related to trauma experiences. Through sandplay therapy, these children who had experienced emotional abuse went through an intersubjective experience of the physical body, engaged in reliable and meaningful relationships, and developed a healthy ego in terms of coping with and recovering from environmental stress.
