Liuqingbang(劉慶邦) often called the emperor of short novels, is an exemplary Chinese writer with forty years of creative activity. The magnitude of his writing, more than 240 short novels, is hard for anyone to aspire to. His vocational experiences as a farmer, a miner, and a reporter constitute a background of his writing. His novels stand out owing to neat logic and diverse changes and foundations saturated with opulent and incessant imaginations which propel the novel’s narrative. The studies of Liuqingbang’s novels have so far concentrated on the characters and contents of his novels such as rural and mining life, the language of novels, regional traits, female characterization, lower-class characters, and esthetic traits derived from his novel style. In order to exemplify his solid narrative control, this article examines some of his representative medium-length and full-length novels in terms of their realistic narrative characteristics in detailing unique local sentiments and atmosphere. The most renowned characteristic of his narrative is high readability derived from the compact logical organization that penetrates his novels. As a result, people tend to read straight through his novels once they open the first page. What are the elements that make us indulge in his novels? This article examines what those elements of novelistic interest are and what propels the narrative of his novels by taking on his medium-length novel 「The Divine Tree(神木)」, 「Where is my hometown?(家園何處)」, and his full-length novel 「Songs of the Plain(平原上的歌謠)」. The language of this novels is clear and plain, with no unnecessary sophistication. He is well versed in the lives of farmers and miners, which shows in his detailed portrayal of the lives of farmers and of the urgent lives of miners, full of desires and struggles, in the dark mines. His has completed his unique world of novels by solidifying unrelenting and abundant logical structure to his narrative. In short, he has opened up a new brand of folk literature, a literature of coal mine situated between the urban and the rural, based on the concern for the people of the lower-class and for the existential conditions of rural exodus workers.
