Objectives: This study reviewed the concepts and applications of Patient-Reported Outcomes (PRO) and measures of Quality of Life (QoL). Methods: We overviewed the current measures of PROs and QoL measures, development methods for measures, and clinical and policy applications with various examples. Results: Clinicians use PROs to make decisions for better effective treat- ments in clinical settings. Health providers or administrators use PROs to monitor and evaluate quality of services for clinical improvements and, to make decisions for efficient managments for fi- nancial reason. Also, PROs are good tools to observe patients’ responses in new clinical trials and to confirm patients’ compliance of treatments. Given the current these versatile applications of PROs in other country, we think there are good practical lessons for clinical or policy implications in Ko- rea. Despite many efforts to use PROs in local studies already, there are still rooms to apply for prac- tical policy applications with PROs. Conclusion: PROs have become significant measures to prove treatments or to make decision for patients with chronic illness. We suggest that Korean clinicians and policy makers should pay more attention to try feasible innovative PROs applications with real- world data.
