With the recent development of eco-friendly and smart ships, there is a growing interest in ship operation based on digital information. Against this background, researches on digital twins has been actively conducted, but the operational concept of ship digital twins and the basic framework for implementing them have not yet been established. In this study, we propose a reference model for a ship digital twin framework based on the analysis of the reference architecture of the manufacturing digital twin standard and related research. Based on this, we also demonstrate the way how to utilize the reference model by implementing a ship monitoring scenario as an example. This reference model is expected to provide the basic structure of a generalized framework in terms of methodology for implementing ship digital twins.
