This study elucidates overall characteristics of Turkish costume culture synchronically and diachronically by comparing the costume of the Ottoman era (the revival period in Turkey) with the modern national costume of Turkey. Miniatures from Peter Mundi"s albums published in the 16th century and representative ethnic costumes by region provided by Turkish cultural education sites are used for analysis. First, the costumes of the Ottoman era were classified by class, occupation, and gender. There are many kinds of turbans, hats, and Kaftans by class, occupation, occasion, or preference. However, there were differences in length of Kaftan and height of shoes depending on the activity. Women wore headdresses with scarves wrapped around their cheeks and pointy hats. Second, in the folk costumes of modern Turkey, there are regional rather than gender-based differences. In agricultural areas, they wore slacks (Shalwar); in trading cities, they wore tight-fitting trousers (Zivga) from thigh to ankle. Costumes in cities in Turkey adjacent to Europe took on a form similar to Western-style suits without traditional decorations. Third, Kaftans worn in multiple layers, wide Shalwars, and belts tied to outerwear were common regardless of age, region, or gender. Long Kaftans have almost disappeared in modern times, replaced by short tops, and the types have been simplified. The cylindrical Fez has replaced various rich, tall hats in modern times. Even for women"s headdresses, cylindrical hats (Arakçın, Terpus, and Tantura) were eliminated and replaced with coins and veil decorations.
