This study is motivated by the questions around preservation of the Seochon Hanok. We highlight the direction of preservation and utilization of hanok, while maintaining the historical and cultural landscape created by urban hanok in hanok-dense areas, rather than focusing on the value of urban hanok as a single entity. Therefore, the exterior of the Seochon Hanok was analyzed in detail to provide basic physical data for the preservation of the Hanok. Officially assessed land prices in Seochon have risen steadily, and show a strong correlation with increasing restaurants and places of accommodation. Accordingly, 20 hanok for commercial use and 15 hanok for guesthouses were analyzed intensively. These 35 cases of 20 commercial use and 15 guesthouses were divided into six categories and the exterior of the hanok were analyzed. Several changes occurred in the opening due to the use of glass and iron materials in case of the commercial hanok exteriors. Many outdoor advertisements were displayed which damaged the hanok. Through the extension of the outer wall, many changes also occurred in the use of the yard. In contrast, there is no major change in the facade of the guesthouse hanok. However, outdoor advertisements have been installed using lanterns to avoid harming the landscape. As a result of gentrification, commercial hanok have changed to open facades using modern materials to attract visitors. Yet, the facade of the hanok has not changed much to provide the visitors the authentic quiet atmosphere created by the hanok that they desire. This study provides implications for the building implementation guidelines of district unit planning by empirically analyzing the exteriors of hanok used for commercial purposes. However, this study limits its scope to focus on exterior analysis and not on analysis of the relationship between hanok structure, form, and urban spatial structure.
