In the modern times, people have shown more interest in creative and unique design with a rising interest in art and culture. As their desire for beauty becomes more diverse, the fields to meet such aesthetic needs have been segmented. As people get more interested in their hairstyles, unique and emotional hairstyling techniques have been developed. Visually familiar geometric patterns are very effective in creating diverse design and delivering intentions with simple images. This study attempted to create new hairstyles by adding the traditional Korean color spectrum ‘obangsaek (color scheme of the five Korean traditional colors)’ and ‘ogansaek (another traditional Korean color palette derived from mixing the tones of obangsaek)’ to modern geometric patterns in a modern fashion according to the latest trend. Specifically, three (3) different hairstyles were created by mixing the images of the past & present and the East & West, using traditional Korean colors based on the simplicity, attractiveness and repeatability of geometric patterns. First, linear beauty was expressed in a geometric fashion, using stripe patterns and obangsaek. Second, fluid beauty which reveals a winding flow was expressed in combination of circular partterns, obangsaek and ogansaek. Third, the heaviness of a square was patterned and designed, using square patterns and ogansaek. This study is meaningful in that it broadened the realm of hairstyling expressions with geometric patterns. It is anticipated that there would be further studies on functional and practical hairstyling with new motives to meet people’s diverse needs.
