The purpose of this paper is to examine Nabokov’s artistic themes in his first prose collection The Return of Chorb. The painful feelings of an exile that Nabokov experienced had left many traces in his works. Exile was not simply a change of places, but a complete break with the past where he spent time in his childhood. Thus, in his works the model of two-world plays a very important role. In the external reality, the two-worlds means Russia and a place of exile, and in the internal reality, it means past and present. Nabokov’s main characters suffer from loss of beloved ones and effort to restore the happy past with them in their memory. The stories in The Return of Chorb does not show high literary achievement in comparison with Nabokov's later representative novels, but we can see a theme of the memory as an artistic reconstruction of the past, which is one of the principles of Nabokov's artistic creation. In this study, focusing on "The Return of Chorb", "The Doorbell", and "Christmas", I examined the themes of artistic memory or subjective memory in Nabokov’s early stories.
