This essay examines a lesser-known poet Elizabeth Moody and her anti-war poem, “Anna’s Complaint” (1795). Despite its literary value as an expression of the war experiences of women, “Anna’s Complaint” has never been discussed on its own. This essay concentrates closely on “Anna’s Complaint” and argues that it is important to explore the relationship between Moody’s use of the ballad genre and her opposition to war. Moody adopts some typical characteristics of the traditional ballad in her poem, such as its subject matter, stanza form, and use of incremental repetition, but she does not follow all the conventions of the genre. She synthesizes features from the traditional ballad into her own expression of an opposition to war in the poem, to effectively indicate her own anti-war commitment and at the same time indirectly condemn government war propaganda and policies. This essay examines William Pitt’s repressive policies, including the suspension of the Habeas Corpus Act in 1794, and the popularity of war poetry, to understand the situation at the time Moody first composed her poem. It then examines traditional, broadside, and literary ballads, and their characteristics, to show how Moody uses some of the features of the ballad to strengthen her argument, while at the same time avoiding directly criticizing the government. It discusses the ways Moody uses features from the ballad genre, and her own treatment of the roles of the main character and the narrator in her poem, to indicate her opposition to the war.
